Hey, Christiaan Hattingh here….
I live in Cape Town, my absolute favorite part of South Africa ( but I’ll tell you more about that in the next column ).
I’m originally from Pretoria where I grew up as the youngest of SO many siblings.
Life has never seemed to work out the way I imaged for myself. Yet, my life has always been an adventure.
For as long as I can remember I have always been occupied with art. Always painting something on some canvas, paper, wall or even drawing in the sand. It was my thing…. I had no interest in exploring other talents. In my teen years I developed a fascination for architecture. I would get home from school and spend hours drawing houses and layouts. Homework was always left for last.
In my year of being a “sweet sixteen”, the idea of creating art with light grabbed my attention. Cameras fascinated me. Photography was a whole new world that opened up to me and by my seventeenth birthday my family gave me a film camera. Soon, I had an endless amount of film rolls with photographs of vibrant sunsets and landscapes….
After school I went to study performing arts. Singing is definitely not one of my talents. You will never see me in a karaoke bar except when I cheer for my talented friends. I did however make good progress as a dancer and was even offered a scholarship for my second year of performing arts. A month into that year I realized that photography was still a very big passion that I wanted to pursue.
So, in 2010 I met a photographer whom I begged to give me a job as an assistant. I was persistent. All I wanted to do was shadow her as a photographer. She finally agreed after I offered to make her coffee as often as she wanted. It was winter, which I think helped in my favor haha! We mainly photographed weddings, sometimes three weddings per weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was hectic to say the least.
After two years I then decided to take the next step and started freelancing under my own name, CHATTphotography. I was too young to understand how hard it would be at first, but luckily for me I have a persistence that drives me to make a success of everything I pursue and I refuse to give up.
Concluding, this will be my eighth year of doing photography full time. I am blessed to be doing what I love and the adventures on which it takes me. I meet the most amazing people and share experiences I never even thought I’d have.
Things I enjoy doing, besides photography….
I love hiking, as you’ll see if you follow me on instagram, @chattphotographysa
This is one of the main reasons why I moved to Cape Town. The trails, the mountains, the scenery. I love being in the beautiful nature of the Western Cape.
When I’m not busy photographing a wedding over the weekend, you’ll most likely see images of my hiking adventures.
As for the rest of my time ( when I’m not editing ), I’ll be drinking wine, eating pizza, spending time with amazing friends and family, and now and then I’ll get lost in doing an oil painting which very few people ever get to see….
Some of the highlights of my photography career have included a number of pretty exciting brands. Such as,
and quite a few other lesser known “big” names.
Although a large part of that success has been a result of my talent and work ethics, it has mostly been because of a divine grace that I’ve had the privilege to experience such blessings.
